First Sunday of Lent

Reflection

As we begin Lent, we recall how Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness, facing temptation yet remaining faithful to the Father. This time of testing prepared Him for His mission. In our own lives, we are also called to turn away from sin and align ourselves more fully with God’s will. Repentance is not just about avoiding wrongdoing but about actively choosing a life of grace and renewal. Where is God calling you to change this Lent? What distractions keep you from Him?

Jesus’ time in the wilderness reminds us that spiritual growth often comes through trials. It is in the desert moments of life that we encounter God most profoundly. As we enter this Lenten season, let us embrace the invitation to reflect, repent, and renew our hearts.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, as we journey through Lent, help us turn away from sin and draw closer to You. Like Jesus in the wilderness, may we remain steadfast in faith, embracing Your call to renewal. Strengthen us in our trials, guide us in our weaknesses, and fill our hearts with Your grace. May this season transform us, so we may live more fully in Your love. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Action Step

Take time for a personal examination of conscience and commit to one specific way you can draw closer to God this week.

Second Sunday of Lent

Reflection

On the mountain, Jesus is transfigured, revealing His divine nature to Peter, James, and John. This moment of glory reminds us that suffering is not the end of the story. In our own lives, we experience both hardship and moments of grace. The Transfiguration encourages us to trust in God’s greater plan. Are there areas where you struggle to trust God? How can you open your heart to His presence?

The disciples were terrified yet also filled with awe at this revelation of Jesus’ glory. Often, we too fear the unknown or struggle to comprehend God’s plan. Yet, the voice from heaven calls us to listen to Jesus. This Lent, let us strive to truly hear Him and follow His guidance.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, as we journey through Lent, help us to trust in Your plan, even when we face trials and uncertainty. Like the disciples on the mountain, may we behold Your glory and listen to Your voice. Open our hearts to Your presence, deepen our faith, and guide us to follow You with courage. May this season of repentance transform us, drawing us ever closer to You. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Action Step

Reflect on a personal challenge and pray for the strength to trust in God’s guidance, even when the way forward seems unclear.

Third Sunday of Lent

Reflection

Jesus calls us to repentance, emphasising that tragedies are not punishments but reminders of our need for conversion. The parable of the barren fig tree illustrates God’s patience and mercy, offering us time to bear fruit. Are we taking this opportunity to grow spiritually? What areas of our lives need transformation?

Moses’ encounter with God in the burning bush reveals a God who hears the cries of His people and desires their freedom. Similarly, God seeks to liberate us from sin and lead us to new life. This Lent, let us respond to His call with open hearts.

Prayer

Merciful God, you call us to repentance, not in fear, but in love. Like the barren fig tree, we are given time to grow—help us to use this season well. Show us the areas of our lives that need transformation and give us the grace to bear good fruits filled with love. Just as You heard the cries of Your people, hear us now as we seek freedom from sin. Open our hearts to Your call and lead us to new life in You. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Action Step

Identify a habit or behaviour that distances you from God and make a conscious effort to change it, seeking His assistance through prayer.

Fourth Sunday of Lent

Reflection

The parable of the Prodigal Son illustrates the infinite mercy of God. The father’s unconditional love for his wayward son reflects the Lord’s own love for us, no matter how far we may have strayed. The elder son, meanwhile, struggles to accept this mercy, much like we sometimes do when we compare ourselves to others. Do we truly believe in God’s forgiveness? Are we willing to extend the same mercy to others?

St Paul reminds us that we are called to be ambassadors of Christ, sharing the message of reconciliation with the world. This Lent, we are invited to embrace the healing power of God’s mercy and to extend that mercy to those around us.

Prayer

Merciful Father, in Your great love, You welcome us back no matter how far we have strayed. Help us to trust in Your forgiveness and embrace the healing power of Your mercy. Teach us Lord to extend that same mercy to others, becoming ambassadors of Your love. May this Lenten season transform our hearts and draw us closer to You. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Action Step

Take a moment to reflect on relationships in your life that need healing. Make an effort to reach out in forgiveness or seek reconciliation where needed.

Fifth Sunday of Lent

Reflection

In today’s Gospel, Jesus encounters a woman caught in adultery, whom the scribes and Pharisees wish to condemn. Instead of passing judgment, He challenges those without sin to cast the first stone. His response reveals both His justice and His mercy—He does not condone sin, but He offers redemption and a new beginning. Are we willing to receive God’s mercy as freely as He offers it? Do we extend that mercy to others?

Isaiah speaks of the Lord doing something new: He makes a path in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. As we approach Holy Week, we are reminded that God’s transformative love makes all things new. What areas of our lives do we need to surrender so that we may receive His renewal?

Prayer

Merciful Lord, you offer us mercy, not condemnation, and invite us into a new beginning. Help us to receive Your forgiveness with open hearts and to extend that mercy to others. As we approach Holy Week, transform our lives with Your love. Create paths in our wilderness and rivers in our deserts, that we may be renewed in You. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Action Step

Identify one habit, sin, or burden that you need to let go of and bring it to God in prayer or through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
